Rotary Club of New Bedford, MA - Weekly GAM

GAM...A nautical term describing the exchange of news between vessels departing from and returning to their ports...

November 14, 2018

The Last Time We Met

Not only did we have a guest speaker, Caroline Paradis, of Clarity Wellness of Fairhaven, we also got a surprise visit from incoming District Governor Steve Albright and his wife Jill. They are visiting all the clubs in the district to introduce themselves and get familiar with us. In their club on Cape Cod, they have run the Youth Exchange program.  Then Caroline then did an awesome presentation on Reiki and Meditation.  She gave us the history and uses for Reiki talking about how it is based on energy and freeing blocked energy in your body.   The medical industry is starting to recognize and use Reiki as an option for treatment to help with healing.  (Sidenote: you can see Caroline this weekend at Your Theatre in their production “Parfumerie”)

Look in the NEXT TIME WE MEET section to see who we have coming up next.  SPOILER: SANTA!!!!

Odds and Ends

Eagle eyed readers of the GAM will have notice in the previous edition that we have a new member.  Major Michael Jung of the Salvation Army has officially transferred to our club.  We welcome the Major and look forward to continuing our work with the Salvation Army.

Ellen reports that while the opening shifts at 9 am are full, she is still in need for people to work the 11 – 1 shift as well as the 1-3.  Please contact her if you can cover one.  Bring a friend or family member.  Wear a festive holiday outfit like a teddy bear or the Clauses.   Bring out some holiday music to play.

Other important information:

Location: Shaw's State Road (15 State Rd, Dartmouth, MA)

Saturday, December 8th.

“Elves” often even bring coffee and cocoa mid shift.

If you can’t ring on this day, Major Jung (our newest member) says to contact him at the Salvation Army and he can give you another day or time.

If you are planning to help at the breakfast, Marc asks that arrive at 8:45 am (or so) in case there is stuff to set up.

(From Marc S.) We still need more Sponsors. Here are Gold Sponsors ($200 Donation) so far:

  • Fire Systems Inc. (Cheryl B).
  • Linda S
  • Marine Hydraulics (Jerry W, who also send his regards to the Club).
  • Bristol County Savings Bank (Marlene L)
  • Better Community Living (Tom Riley).

Last year we had 8 Gold Sponsors and 18 Donors overall, totaling $2,365. So far this year, including the 5 Gold Sponsors mentioned above, we only have 11 overall Donors aggregating $1,405 of Contributions. There are a few other possible donors who have not sent in checks that might bring the aggregate up closer to $2,000, but still below last year's level.

Please let Marc know if you need sponsor forms.

Generally in this section we would share an update of allocation requests and their status, as well as any policy changes or other interesting business.   There were no request or other major items to report.  Just wanted to say that we had the full board in attendance.  Not sure when that last happened.  Thank you as always to Cheryl for hosting.

The following Rotarians had 100% attendance last month with makeups (5 meetings in October): Cheryl B., Lisa F., Carole J., Stu L., and Carl S.

President-Elect John wants to invite all the club members and guests to a fun night of music and food at the Freetown VFW Post 6643 on November 17th. Come see renowned entertainer Robert Black perform as Johnny Cash.  Feast on chicken, pulled pork and corn chowder as DJ Johnny Angels spin the hits.  (I think we’re all familiar with Johnny Angel.).  Dinner starts at 6 pm with Robert Black performing at 8 pm.  Tickets are only $15 and can be gotten from John or the VFW hall located at 89 Middleboro Road, East Freetown.

Consider this your first notice that dues are due by the end of the year.  They are $65 and cover you for 6 months.  Please contact Lisa for payment information.

Always a fun event, we ask everyone attending the meeting on January 9th at the Wamsutta to bring a wrapped gift of about $10 value.  It can be something new, something you are re-gifting or something you cleaned out of your workshop as Mark T. used to do.

One More Thing – An Orren Classic

Bald-headed Gent to Barber - "You ought to cut my hair cheaper, there's so little of it."

Barber - "Oh, no.  In your case we don't charge for cutting the hair.  We charge for having to search for it!"
