Rotary Club of New Bedford, MA - Weekly GAM

GAM...A nautical term describing the exchange of news between vessels departing and returning from its port...

2008

This week's Meeting - July 9, 2008

We are fortunate to have a member of the New Bedford Police department bring his K-9 partner.  Both work in the explosive detection field.  Officer Bowdoin has spoken to several Rotary Clubs in the area and has come highly recommended.  Please come and support this wonderful speaker!

Announcements

On July 29th, the New Bedford Rotary Club will be renting a bus to go to the Pawtucket Red Sox game.  We are reaching out to local youth organizations to bring the kids in the community to the game.  This is all part of Rotary International “Make Dreams Real” campaign.  Please let me know if you will be attending this community service/fellowship event.  Also, I will need to know how many tickets you will need and if you will be riding on the bus.

Invoice dues went out this week.  If you did not receive your invoice or if you have any questions please kindly speak with Tom Rainford and Rich Medicke.

Last Week's Meeting

Despite the fact it was a holiday week, we had a pretty good turn out.  It was a festive meeting.  We inducted three new members of the New Bedford Rotary Club; Paula Borges and Charlene Rocha from Child and Services, and Kevin Inkly from First Citizens Credit Union.  Paula and Charlene are new members to Rotary; Kevin is transferring from the E. Greenwich club with perfect attendance.  I am very excited to have them as the newest members of the New Bedford Rotary Club.

As if that were enough, we had a dynamic classification talk with our very own Mark Shpritzer.  Mark gave us a very comprehensive talk about his life prior to being “the candy man”.  Mark grew up in New York and has 2 siblings.  His aunt was a very influential member of his family.  She was one of the first female officers in the New York Police force and is credited to influencing diversity in the police department and the work force.  She certainly was a force in the women’s movement in the United States .

Mark also spoke with great deal of love about his wife and children.  His son’s girlfriend we found is in roller derby in the North Shore … and has a pretty colorful skating name.

We also found out Handy Candy got its name from a friend of the family who… kind of pointed out the obvious I guess… she indicated that you put your hand to get the candy…and hence Handy Candy.

Once Mark was done with his talk, several women in the club rushed the candy machine like it was a concert to get their “fix” of chocolate.  It was quite the site to see.

Thanks Mark for the talk!!!
